How Do You Start a Diesel Generator?

Starting a diesel generator isn't just about pushing a button — it depends on the size, design, and application of the genset.

Small Diesel Gensets

In the past, you might see rope-pull or hand-crank starters on small diesel engines. But unlike gasoline engines, diesel engines have high compression and are harder to start manually — especially in cold weather.

Today, most small diesel generators are equipped with battery-powered electric starters. Just turn a key or press a button. These systems use either a traditional starter motor or the generator’s own windings to crank the engine.

Larger Diesel Gensets

For bigger, multi-cylinder diesel engines, manual starting is not practical. These always rely on battery/electric start systems, with the batteries charged via an onboard alternator.

Standby Diesel Gensets (Auto Start)

For homes, businesses, or critical facilities, automatic start systems are now standard. When the power goes out:

Sensors detect the outage.

The genset starts automatically from battery power.

A transfer switch shifts the load from the grid to the generator — within seconds.

When grid power returns, it switches back and shuts down the genset.

Whether it’s a small portable unit or a standby power system, starting reliability is key — and electric start systems have become the industry standard.
